The Case to the Holiday Catalog Ornament!

I always thought that I would grow up to write a book someday … the title of my post today sounds like a mystery waiting to be solved! Alas, that’s not what I’m writing about today so I’m sorry if I led you on!! LOL!

“Case” is an acronym that means “Copy And Share Everything”. That’s the heart of Stampin’ Up! You see a sample, it makes you want to imitate the creation to come up with something as good or better than the last sample you made! I just loved the cover of Stampin’ Up’s new Holiday Catalog (It starts tomorrow friends!!) and I set out to make one similar to share with you!

I had all the materials that they did … the Holiday Ornament framelits (did I mention that I can preorder all of these goodies as a demonstrator??!!), the Ornaments Keepsakes stamp set, the silicone sheet to make hot-gluing a cinch, my score board, the new Cherry Cobbler tulle ribbon…
Here’s what I created!!

To make this ornament, you need to stamp 20 large and 20 small ornaments, then individually cut them out with the coordinating framelit.
I stamped the large round-ish ornament in Old Olive, and then stamped the smaller oblong ornament in Cherry Cobbler.

This is perhaps the most time-consuming step of the entire ornament. I probably should have invested in a second set of framelits, and if I attempt this again, I quite possibly will! I can always “gift” the second set later, right?!!

I’ve given this tip to my class-members when cutting out stamped images with the framelit. If you don’t want your framelit to move (after you’ve gone through all the trouble of stamping!), you should have a small pad of post-it notes next to you. You can re-use the same post-it multiple times (it does wear out eventually!) but you ensure that your stamped image will be perfectly positioned when you cut it out. This is especially important with the use of my Big Shot (LOL!) — the cutting pads have been in use for 3 years — they’re marred and cracked and warped, but refuse to break, so I don’t want to ruin another pair (although I have 3 sets of back-up pads waiting to be used!!).

You then put your ornaments in each size in groups of 4 — you’ll score 3 of the 4 ornaments right down the middle on your score board, and set aside the 4th ornament of each group. The non-scored ornament will serve as your back or base to the other 3 ornaments.

Adhere the other 3 ornaments that are scored together, 1/2 back to 1/2 back to 1/2 back (does that make sense?!). Check out my photo below.

Adhere the 3 united ornaments to the one non-scored ornament to make a 3D ornament that you’ll attach with the other grouped ornaments.

Phew! Sounds complicated but it’s really not!

I’m not going to show the last few steps in the interest of time, but I’ll talk you through it. (I don’t have the other 16 + 20 ornaments stamped or cut out yet, and I didn’t think to take pictures throughout the creation of the first one!!

You will also need to cut a 1″ x 12″ strip of designer paper (I used the new Candlelight Specialty DSP that’s in the mini!) that you’re going to score for your center rosette. I scored every 1/2″, but you could do bigger or smaller increments. The width of your paper before scoring is what determines the size of the rosette. If you did a 2″ x 12″ strip, your rosette after assembling would be 4+”. The depth of your rosette is determined by how closely your score lines are made. In other words, if you don’t want a “deep” or “too-raised” rosette, score closer together after you’ve cut your strip. Assemble your rosette. I’ve pictured a close-up view of my ornament and rosette.

Next, you need your hot glue gun (most immediate results but the other glues that Stampin’ Up! sells would most likely work) and the new silicone craft sheet. When they say that the glued object lifts right off the craft sheet, Stampin’ Up! was not kidding! I used my glue gun to adhere a bunch of the loops of embroidery thread (the cover ornament used linen thread but mine is MIA!) together. I made 6″ lengths of thread into loops. Set them aside or wait for them to dry, then assemble your ornament.
You’re going to lay all 5 sets of the large ornaments on your new silicone craft sheet. I squeezed a good dollop of hot glue into the center, then started laying my ornaments side by side, uniting them in the center of the glue by the tops of the ornaments.

After that had sufficiently dried, I then cut small pieces of the new tulle ribbon. I think I may have been stingy — there wasn’t need for that since there’s quite a lot. The width is 3 1/2″ , and I probably cut five 2″ lengths, then bunched them together in a cone shape. I tucked them in between each set of “petals”, and then glued them in place.

I then also tucked in the smaller grouped ornaments. I didn’t set them up as I did the first bunch, meaning that I individually glued each group to the larger ornament. I think if you look at my close-up view of the ornament, you can see what I mean by that.

Lastly, I added my rosette to the assembled ornament, laying it and “squishing” it on top. I accented the rosette with the new Vintage Faceted Buttons (love them!) and an extra-large pearl. I added a long length of linen thread … yep, it showed up at the end! I glued that to the back of the ornament. To be extra sure that the ornament would stay together, I punched out a large circle of cardstock and attached that to the back of the ornament, gluing my hanger thread behind it.
